Happy Wednesday, everyone! I am so excited to introduce you to a new series on The SK Way – Recently Read! Every so often, I will publish a post highlighting some of my recent reads. I always enjoy getting book recommendations and seeing about what other people are reading, so I thought it would be fun to share the what’s on my personal bookshelf and the books that I have “recently read”! I hope you enjoy!
- American Royals: I had seen this book by Katharine McGee everywhere! I was hearing so many good things about it and just had to see what the hype was all about. I will say, I was skeptical when I first purchased the book since it is so different from the things I usually read, but I absolutely LOVED it!! If you are not familiar, American Royals tells the story of what our country would be like if George Washington opted to be king as opposed to an elected official at the end of the Revolutionary War. The book takes place in present day and centers around the children of America’s royal family as they balance their lives as royalty and as teenagers. I liked that each chapter incorporated a different perspective from each of the main characters – some of the plot reminded me of the Princess Diaries movies! Overall, I enjoyed this book so much more than I anticipated and I cannot wait to read the sequel. If you haven’t read this one yet, I highly recommend!
- The Perfect Couple: I love a good mystery, so naturally I had very high expectations for this Elin Hilderbrand “whodunit”. This book is about a Nantucket wedding gone wrong when the Maid of Honor is found dead on the morning of the big day. I really enjoyed the detail and description of the island – it makes the reader feel like you are actually there! However, I will say that Hilderbrand’s writing style includes a lot of background and switching back and forth between past and present. Everything comes together in the end and I understand why all of the background information was important to the storyline, but this book honestly took me longer than I had hoped to read. I had picked it up and put it down so many times that it became a little hard to follow, but the last 200 pages really picked up and I definitely enjoyed it!
- The Gut-Immune Connection: If you know me, then you know that I am a huge medical nerd and could not pass up this book when I saw it! We touched on this topic during my senior seminar last year, so I was excited to dive a little bit deeper and learn more. In this book, Dr. Mayer shows us that our bodies are so interconnected and emphasizes the profound effect that our gastrointestinal system has on our immune system and on our overall health. I am almost done with this book and I am finding it to be really interesting! Even if you are not a “science person” or don’t read nonfiction, I think this is something that everyone should read. Before reading this book, I had no idea how significant our gut microbiome was and how this, in conjunction with the foods we eat, plays a direct role in not only our gut health, but in our health as a whole.
Thank you so much for reading! I hope you enjoyed learning about some of my recent reads or maybe added a few to your list! What have you been reading lately?
