Summering in the South

July 31, 2026 · In: Life, Travel

Welcome back to the blog! If you follow along on Instagram, you may have seen that we recently took a quick weekend trip to Bowling Green, Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee! We were traveling for a wedding but decided to make the most of our time and turn it into a mini vacation. I thought it would be fun to share a quick recap of the trip to look back on what we did as well as share some recommendations if you ever find yourself in the area!

Friday

We woke up bright and early on Friday morning to catch a quick 30-minute flight from Norfolk to Washington D.C. before landing in Nashville as our final destination. My husband and I are big fans of The Ramsey Show and their associated podcasts, so we picked up our rental car at the airport and made our way to Franklin to spend the afternoon at their headquarters. We were greeted with free coffee and cookies in the lobby and had the opportunity to watch a live recording of the show which was so much fun! Later that afternoon, we hopped back in the car and made the short drive across state lines to Bowling Green.

Saturday

After some much needed sleep, we woke up on Saturday morning with lots of time to explore before the wedding later that evening. We started our day with breakfast at Sweet Milk which was within walking distance of our hotel! I think they have a Nashville location as well but it reminded me of a First Watch with more of a southern twist. We ordered some iced lattes and thoroughly enjoyed the biscuits and homemade raspberry jam that came with each of our breakfasts! Once we were fueled for the day, we drove over to Mammoth Cave National Park. I didn’t realize how many caves there were in Kentucky but many of them have historical significance which was really interesting to learn about. We took the self-guided tour which allowed us to explore one of the caves which was such a cool experience. It truly looked like something out of a movie! The wedding we attended was also in a cave but at a different location in Bowling Green. I think it’s safe to say we were near-experts at cave exploration by the end of the night haha!

Sunday

On Sunday, we made our way back to Nashville for the final day of our trip. We had been to Nashville once before so it was nice to be back! We did a lot of exploring our first time there so we had already walked around Broadway, visited the 12 South Neighborhood, Centennial Park, etc.. This trip, we had limited time and were starting to get tired after a late night on Saturday so we decided to stay around the downtown area for the day. We stayed at The Moxy in downtown Nashville which was a really unique stay! The hotel has a very industrial western vibe to it that is perfect for the location! We arrived before our check-in time so while we waited for our room to be ready, we sat down for brunch at The Hampton Social. Our friend recommended it to us and it did not disappoint! We had mimosas and a great breakfast while we took in the light and airy coastal ambience of the restaurant – definitely stop in if you’re there! While chatting with our waiter, he told us that a new location just recently opened here in Virginia Beach which is so fun! We spent the rest of the day exploring the shops on Broadway and ended the night on National Ice Cream day with a pint of chocolate oreo from Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream which was the perfect way to round out the weekend!

On Monday morning we made our way back to the airport and returned home to Virginia. It was a quick trip filled with so many fun memories! As much as I love to explore new places, it feels great to be back in our regular routine. I am so excited to see what else we get up to this summer. Thank you so much for reading!
