Happy Wednesday, everyone and welcome back to The SK Way! If you know me, then you know that I love to organize. I think having a clean space is the key to having a clear mind – not to mention having everything in its place is just really satisfying ๐ I try to keep my spaces as organized as possible, but every now and then things need to be readjusted. One of these things for me is my closet. As hard as I try, my closet seems to be the one place that I dread cleaning out. For my birthday this year, my sister gave me the Home Edit book and I have been obsessed ever since!
If you are not familiar with The Home Edit, it is a Netflix home improvement show featuring two best friends and professional organizers. They go into different homes and organize a dedicated room in the house. (if there are any fellow Legally Blonde fans out there, you’ll love the Reese Witherspoon episode!) Since the premiere of the show, Clea and Joanna have released two books – one of which is A Guide to Organizing and Realizing Your House Goals. Today, I am going to be tackling the closet section and sharing some of the tips I have learned along the way:
The section opens with the “Closet Code of Conduct” – essentially guidelines to help make the clean-out process a bit easier. Here are some of the main takeaways:
- Be realistic: If I haven’t worn it in a year, and probably never will, it is time to donate it or give it to someone who could use it more than me
- Get Rid of Guilt: If you don’t like something in your closet and it is taking up space, it’s time for it to go – don’t feel guilty about donating something you know you’ll never wear!
- No Backsies: Once an item has left your closet, don’t let it find it’s way back in! Stay strong in your decision ๐
Now that we’ve gone through the clean-out tips, it’s time to organize! Something I love about The Home Edit is the fact that there is no cookie cutter way to organize. Throughout the chapter, they give examples of various different types of closets so you can pick one that works best for you! I am working specifically with the “Small Space Closet” – here is how I used some of their advice to organize my closet “The SK Way”:
My closet could still use some work, but for the most part, I followed their recommendations. I started by purchasing some storage bins from Target. Clea and Joanna recommend storing lesser-used sandals and clothing items on the top shelf in this closet model. At the top of my closet (shown at right) I have three bins where I store out-of-season clothing items and summer shoes. I also added a bin on the middle shelf (left) where I keep my camera equipment and other tech-related items that I grab on a daily basis.
They recommend hanging handbags on a door hook, but since my closet has two sliding doors, I placed my everyday purse on the middle shelf for easy access and the rest of them in a storage bin on the top shelf.
As for the hanging items, The Home Edit suggests organizing your clothes in color order – I am still working on this but it seems to be coming along day by day ๐ On the right hand side of my closet past my cardigans and longer jackets, is this hanging closet organizer (similar style linked here). These are perfect for storing your jeans and pants. It is definitely a game changer when it comes to saving space!
Finally, the book suggests storing your frequently-worn shoes at the bottom of your closet. They typically use stackable shoe boxes, but for now, I just have mine placed at the bottom
I had so much reorganizing my closet with The Home Edit and I can’t wait to see what else I can transform! If you haven’t picked up a copy of the book, I highly recommend doing so – there is a section for pretty much any area of your house you can think of.
Thank you so much for reading and I hope you have a great rest of your week!
