St. Simons Island Travel Guide

March 22, 2023 · In: Life, Travel

Happy Wednesday, friends! For this week’s post, I am so excited to share another travel guide! I recently spent the week in St. Simons Island, Georgia and had an absolute blast! As much as I love my little coastal New Jersey town, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t itching to relocate down south after this trip, haha! My boyfriend has family that moved to the island so I was able to include a lot of local recommendations as well. I hope you enjoy!

How to Get There

St. Simons Island is located about an hour south of Savannah, GA and an hour north of Jackonsville, FL. If you are planning to fly, either one of these airports would be a great option! My boyfriend was meeting me at the airport from his military base in North Carolina so I chose to fly into JAX since it was the cheaper option at the time. If you’re coming from up north like we were, I think Savannah would be the more convenient option, but definitely keep an eye on prices!

Where to Stay

Since this was a longer trip, we opted to stay in an airbnb (linking our listing here). We absolutely adored the quaint, coastal condo overlooking the golf course and got a ton of use out of the screened-in porch during our stay. It was nice to be able to relax in a space that was completely our own. We also had a fully stocked kitchen that gave us the opportunity to make breakfast for ourselves and cook dinner when we weren’t spending time with his family or wanted to save some money on food. There is a Harris Teeter close by where we were able to get all of our groceries!

If you’re planning a shorter stay or would rather stay at a hotel, the King & Prince Beach & Golf Resort is located right on the beach with easy access to restaurants on the island. There are also a number of mainstream and independent hotels across St. Simons.

Where to Eat

FIddlers

On our first night, we ate at Fiddlers. This is a great spot for local seafood and traditional southern food. They also have an array of fun cocktails! I would recommend the cucumber mule, shrimp beignets, fried green tomatoes, and the sweet tea of course! I ordered the fish & chips basket which was also really good! There is something for everyone on the menu which is great!

Echo

My boyfriend and I got dressed up one night for a fun date at Echo. This restaurant is located inside of the King & Prince Resort but is open to the public. We had the truffle fries as an appetizer (still thinking about these tbh) and I ordered the shrimp tacos that had fresh wild Georgia shrimp and served in cheese-stuffed tortillas. We both loved what we ordered and would definitely go back!

The Wharf

The Wharf is located a short drive away on Jekyll Island. Similar to Echo, The Wharf is part of the Jekyll Island Club but is open to the public. I absolutely loved the waterfront ambience and the gorgeous views of the sunset! At this point, I had already eaten so much shrimp (lol) so I opted for a peach mule and the grilled chicken BLT. My boyfriend ordered a seafood mac-n-cheese that looked to die for! I would also recommend the fish dip as an appetizer!

Frosty’s

Frosty’s is a great place to stop for lunch or a quick snack! The 70’s retro-inspired interior is so much fun! A great place to stop for a burger with traditional southern pimento cheese or some fries!

Coffee & Snacks

If you’re looking for a quick bite, I would 100% recommend Dulce Dough! We stopped here for a homemade brioche donut one day and they were incredible! I think they serve coffee and breakfast sandwiches as well! While we were exploring the local boutiques, we stumbled across Jittery Joe’s coffee shop which was attached to a bookstore! There’s nothing like a cup of coffee and a good book :). On our last day on the island, we ventured into Wake Up Coffee Company which would be the perfect place to catch up with friends or get some work done. Don’t forget to stop by The Cottage next to the King & Prince for some coffee or frozen custard!

There were a few more restaurants that we did not have a chance to go to, but would love to try on our next visit! I’ll link their websites here:

  • Reid’s Apothecary – a restaurant/speakeasy located just off the island in Brunswick, GA
  • Del Sur
  • Georgia Sea Grill

Where to Go

To avoid this post being crazy long, I’ll list out some of my favorite things we did and places we explored! if you want more information on any of these attractions, feel free to message me on Instagram!

Shopping

  • Southern Tide
  • Two Friends (my favorite stop!)
  • St. Simons Pier – lots of cute stores here!

Destinations

  • Jekyll Island – so much cool history here, definitely stop by driftwood beach and the Georgia Sea Turtle Center!
  • Fort Frederica – great for history lovers!
  • Avenue of the Oaks – a great location to see rows of Spanish moss oak trees!
  • Sea Island – exclusive community that requires a pass, we were able to explore the area on bikes!
