Personal style is something that is ever-evolving. As we grow and mature, our tastes and interests likely do as well. Our personal style can also be influenced by our surroundings such as where we live and what we do for work. When I think back to some of the outfits that I wore during college, and even high school, it’s interesting to see how far my sense of style has come over the years! Your twenties is such a formative time for numerous reasons, but I feel that this is typically the time in people’s lives where they figure out what they truly like to wear and solidify their preferences. For me, my style interests have always fallen within the preppy/classic & timeless category. As I’ve gotten older, I have started to learn what aspects of this style I love and choose to emulate through my everyday outfits. If you are looking to define your personal style or have found yourself in a period where you’d like to change your style, I hope these three simple tips can help you along the way!
search for inspiration
The first step in curating your wardrobe to reflect your personal style is to search for inspiration! Whenever I start to get a little bored with my outfits, my first stop is always Pinterest! I love to search for specific clothing pieces that I am looking to style (ex: linen pants) or a specific occasion that I am trying to find an outfit for (ex: casual brunch looks). This is a great way to utilize similar pieces that you already own while finding new ways to style them. I also have a board titled “style inspiration” where I can save different outfits that I see while scrolling that may serve as inspiration or can be recreated at a later time.
back to the basics
If you are in a position where you are switching up your style, you may be in need of a wardrobe refresh depending on how much change you are looking to make. If this is the case, I would recommend starting small with a few basic pieces that you can easily mix and match. Once you have this capsule wardrobe of sorts, you can build on it by adding additional pieces, accessories, etc. The best part about this is that basic wardrobe staples can be purchased from virtually anywhere! You can start small with your wardrobe base, and then decide what pieces are worth it for you to invest in later on. If I were starting from scratch with a classic & timeless wardrobe for summer, I would start with pieces such as:
- a white button down
- linen pants or shorts
- light wash and/or white jeans
- jean shorts
- a couple of solid t-shirts for layering
- a striped shirt
- white sneakers
- a comfortable pair of sandals
- a canvas tote
These pieces are classic staples that you can mix and match to create multiple different outfits! Again, you can build on this base with accessories and pieces that you already own, or make note of things you’d like to add to your wardrobe later on.
what are you most comfortable in?
At the end of the day, the most important aspect of personal style is just that – it’s personal. In my opinion, the people with the best style don’t limit themselves to a certain box or description. They wear what they like and what makes them comfortable! Your style may fall into a specific category at its core, but it shouldn’t limit you! It may take some trial and error, but that is all part of the fun! In time, you will learn what feels most authentic to you.
